Passing of Howard Zinn…

January 28, 2010

Howard Zinn passed away at the age of 89. A great person who embodied what everyone should strive for in their own country. A sense of social justice, and demand for responsibility and activism when those in power choose simply to do wrong.

He embodied a belief and an attitude that helped me as a young idealist, now that I’m much older, even though my focus has changed, his beliefs have maintained and manifested themselves in what I think is the better part of myself. people should care about what government does, and what they stand for, and if you don’t agree, you should go to them and say it. they represent you, and only you can hold them accountable. I think the US needs this now more so than ever since the country was founded. The people who voted Obama in, need to stand up and demand much reform before it gets left in the dust. People don’t realize but If the US fail, Canada hurts. So the betterment of North America depends upon the next 40 years of action.

The core of Howard Zinn’s life work was to enlighten and inspire a desire for more, a desire for the exsistance of human truth and universal human just.

Film Recommendation

January 26, 2010

Wow!! Not in quite a while has a film exceeded all expectations and drove a solid punch driving the wind from my lungs.

In a year dominated by the press for films like Hurt Locker and Avatar, it’s wonderful to be reminded of the power of how only simply a well written script, little to no budget and great performances can transport you to another country, planet, even though in the 2002 film THE SLAUGHTER RULE, takes place in America.

Ryan Gosling really is an actor who controls his own destiny. He can be as big as he desires to be. That being said, It’s obvious when I say I’ll watch this young actor perform in anything and that is truly my conviction for watching this film. But Gosling is not the primary reason you should see this. It’s David Morse.  Definitely the greatest performance of his career. The direction is superb, the script is one of the most original I’ve come across. check it out.

Leno Vs O’Brien

January 16, 2010

I find this all quite juvenile simply because there are non they more important things at hand but none the less I’ve enjoyed Conan’s brand of comedy since he started and I feel a tad bit disheartened by Conan not being able to continue his run on the Tonight Show.

Brian Bielmann is a renowned surf photographer who risks life-threatening injury to capture surfers cutting across the face of immense swells. But he also counts among his influences the work of the dance and fashion photographer Howard Schatz and his book, “Water/Dance.”
